Spring driving challenges

On Behalf of | Mar 26, 2024 | Car Accidents |

The average driver welcomes the arrival of spring with a bit of relief – because nobody really enjoys driving in the snow.

However, spring brings its own share of hazards to the road, and even seasoned drivers can be taken off guard by some of them. Here are some of the biggest spring roadway hazards and how to cope:

Changeable weather

Spring is notorious for its fluctuating weather patterns, ranging from sunny skies to sudden downpours or fog. These rapid weather changes can create hazardous driving conditions, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of accidents. To combat this, stay informed about weather forecasts before heading out and adjust your driving times accordingly. Slow down during inclement weather, increase following distances and use your headlights when needed.

Potholes

The freeze-thaw cycle of winter followed by spring’s warmth often leads to the formation of potholes. Be on the lookout for potholes and uneven pavement, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles to give yourself ample time to react to obstacles in the road. Watch for other drivers who are swerving abruptly to avoid potholes, as this can increase the possibility that they’ll lose control of their vehicles.

Increased pedestrian activity

Warmer weather often means more people are out and about, whether walking, jogging or cycling. As a result, you need to be especially mindful of pedestrians and cyclists sharing the road with you. Always yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections, and give cyclists plenty of space when passing.

Allergies

Sneezing, watery eyes and congestion can impair concentration and reaction times, increasing the risk of accidents. If you suffer from allergies, be careful about taking your medications before getting behind the wheel, because that can lead to drowsy driving and get you into an accident.

If you do end up in a springtime accident with another driver who isn’t as careful as you, it’s always wisest to seek legal guidance about your options.
