Campaign aims to crack down on pedestrian deaths at the shore

It is summer, which means massive crowds are flocking to Monmouth County beaches. The influx of people and vehicles at the shore also means that the chances of being in accident involving a pedestrian are greatly increased. Sadly, such accidents are often deadly for the person who was walking. At Escandon, Fernicola, Anderson & Covelli, we understand how devastating it can be to lose someone you love in a fatal accident.

According to New Jersey 101.5, 768 pedestrians were killed in New Jersey between 2011 and 2015. A campaign has been underway for the last few years to help curb those numbers by focusing on municipalities along the Jersey shore. Street Smart NJ aims to bring attention to this important issue by reminding both pedestrians and drivers of the state’s road laws. This increased visibility does appear to be having an effect. In 2016, analysis showed that the safety campaign led to 28 percent fewer pedestrian violations. It was also found that drivers were 40 percent more likely to yield to pedestrians.

If you are a motorist, you are encouraged to be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for people who are walking. You should also be sure to adhere to posted speed limits. Pedestrians can play their part by always obeying traffic signals and only crossing busy streets in crosswalks.

The most important thing you can do is to simply pay attention and avoid being distracted, whether you are behind the wheel or enjoying a day walking around the boardwalk.
