Fatigued driving can stem from several factors

On Behalf of | Apr 9, 2025 | Car Accidents |

Drivers must ensure they’re well rested and in good condition to drive so they can remain safe while they’re on the road. Fatigued driving is one dangerous activity that can have catastrophic consequences.

The issue with fatigued driving is that it’s a fully preventable hazard. Drivers can simply avoid getting behind the wheel when they’re dealing with anything that could lead to drowsiness.

Why is fatigued driving dangerous?

Fatigued driving can have a negative impact on the driver’s ability to operate the vehicle safely. By the time a driver goes 20 hours without sleep, they’re dealing with the same driving effects as someone who’s legally intoxicated.

Another reason why fatigued driving is dangerous is that the driver may suffer from microsleeps. These can last several seconds, which leaves the vehicle without proper control for that entire period.

What factors can lead to fatigued driving?

Lack of sleep is a primary factor in fatigued driving, but there are also other possible causes. These include medical conditions, medications and driving at a time when the body expects sleep. Driving on familiar roads or for long periods of time may also lead to fatigue.

Fatigued drivers can cause crashes that result in significant injuries. Victims of these crashes may require considerable medical care, which is costly. They may opt to seek compensation to help them cover those expenses and others related to the crash. A personal injury claim must be filed within a specific time limit, so it may be best to work with someone familiar with these situations.
