There is an awful lot of traffic on the roads around shopping malls and grocery stores in the run-up to Christmas. That can make things dangerous, whether you travel by car, bike or on foot.
The following tips can help you to stay safe:
1. Be patient and kind
Christmas is meant to be a time of goodwill to all, but it may not seem like that on the roads and parking lots. You’ll see people cursing at each other or worse as they battle for parking spaces or try to navigate the mass of traffic crawling to their destination. Frustration can soon build up, leaving people less careful, more aggressive and more likely to cause a crash.
2. Assume people may not have seen you
Whether walking across the parking lot from the store or pulling out of a side road in your car, you should assume that a driver may not have seen you. Many of them will not be looking out for you because they are so engrossed in thoughts about where to find the present their child wants, what to serve for lunch or how they will cope with yet another Christmas with that obnoxious family member.
3. Take particular care when passing behind vehicles
As you cross the parking lot you likely pass behind numerous vehicles. With so many cars jammed tightly in, it can be hard for you to spot the reversing lights of a car pulling out. It can also be hard for the driver to see you approach. Take your time and use the designated walkways where available.
4. Take a break
If you can feel the tension rising in your body, take a break. Don’t just get into your car and carry on as that could leave you more likely to make an error and crash. It could also leave you more likely to react badly at the first hint of provocation from another motorist.
If you do end up in a crash this Christmas, learning more about your legal options should take priority over all other items on your to-do list.
