Why is the back seat no longer safest in a crash?

On Behalf of | Oct 20, 2024 | Car Accidents |

For previous generations of drivers, it was common knowledge that the back seat was safer than the front. The front seat was closer to the impact point in the head-on collision, and people were more likely to suffer severe injuries. Fatalities were less common in the back seat – although they certainly did happen.

However, statistics in recent years indicate that the back seat is no longer safer than the front. What has caused this change? Is there something wrong with modern car design that makes the back seat more dangerous than it needs to be?

The front seat got safer

No, the back seat isn’t less safe today than it was 50 years ago. If anything, it is likely safer in a modern vehicle, as automotive regulations and standards have improved dramatically.

But the switch has occurred because front seat safety systems have developed very quickly. Many drivers now have multiple airbags, for example, along with crumple zones, which help to dissipate the energy in a crash.

When it comes to saving lives, engineers have focused on the front seat because they know that it will be occupied 100% of the time. The fastest way to have an impact was to make the front driver’s seat as safe as possible.

Seeking compensation

Automotive design is certainly improving and can help to save lives, but it won’t prevent all injuries or accidents. If you’ve been seriously injured or lost a loved one, make sure you know what legal options you have to seek financial compensation. You may want to consider costs like pain and suffering,  medical bills, lost wages and more.
