When you are involved in a car accident, you need to exchange information with the other driver before leaving the scene. But what details do you need to collect?
Here are the details to exchange:
1. Personal information
Anyone involved in an accident in New Jersey is required to give their name and address. Thus, you and the other driver should exchange your personal details.
2. Vehicle details
Another crucial piece of information to exchange is each other’s license and registration certificate. You can obtain the other driver’s license number and confirm their personal information from these documents.
Other vehicle details to write down are license plate number, color and model.
3. Insurance information
You and the other driver should also exchange each other’s insurance details (insurance name and policy number).
What if they refuse?
According to New Jersey law, you are entitled to receive the information mentioned above if you are the driver or occupant of a vehicle involved in an accident.
If you are no longer present at the accident scene, perhaps you were rushed to the hospital, the other driver should provide a police officer with their details. If a police officer is not present, they should report the accident to the nearest office of the local police department.
If your vehicle was unattended during the accident, for example, in a parking lot crash, the other driver should locate you. They can ask the parking lot security guard to help them find you. If they can’t locate you immediately, they should attach a written notice secured in a noticeable place giving their information.
