How can truck drivers be as safe as possible?

When getting behind the wheel of a truck in New Jersey, you need to be aware of the additional challenges of driving such a large and unwieldy vehicle. Whether you are on the street or the highway, there are some things you can do to maximize safety and minimize the chance of an accident.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says that driving while distracted can be a huge liability. Not only is it illegal, but it also endangers other vehicles on the road. If you need to check something on your phone or have a bite to eat, find a truck stop to pull over at.

When driving through a work zone, be prepared to have to make a sudden stop. It is best to slow down as you enter the work zone, even if the way seems clear in front of you. This is a good practice when driving any vehicle, but it is especially true with trucks, which take longer to come to a full stop.

You can prepare for your trip ahead of time by checking your route. Be aware that you will need to proceed with increased caution if going through a mountainous area or if the weather is going to be bad along your route.

If you are feeling tired, it is better to get some more sleep and be a little late on your route than to put yourself and other drivers in danger. Drowsy driving can make you much more likely to slip up, and when lives are on the line, you need to keep your priorities straight.
