Can you encourage responsibility from your fleet drivers?

One of the benefits of owning your own company is being able to dictate hiring policies and put guidelines in place that determine how potential candidates will be assessed to determine their eligibility for a job. Because you run a trucking company in New Jersey, you are looking particularly close at people who show responsibility and have a clean driving record. You want to guarantee that all members of your fleet understand that their driving is a reflection of your company’s reputation and that irresponsibility could not only damage your company’s success but jeopardize their safety and that of other motorists on the road.

According to the National Transportation Safety Board, your vigilance in recognizing deficiencies and potential safety hazards and addressing them before they become a threat is critical in protecting everyone’s safety. Likewise, if one of your trucks is not operating the right way, it should immediately be put out of service until proper repairs are made. Finally, if you have any suspicions at all about the behavior of any member of your fleet, their driving privileges should be suspended until you can adequately address your concerns.

Some of the things you can do to protect the safety of your drivers, fleet and the general public include the following:

  • Implement life-saving technology.
  • Screen drivers for medical issues including sleep apnea.
  • Develop, implement and regulate performance standards.
  • Use a truck log to monitor driver activity.
  • Guarantee that all of your drivers have received adequate sleep before their shift.
