North Bergen motorcyclist hospitalized after being hit by car

The numbers of those killed in New Jersey motorcycle crashes have gone down over the past few years. According to the latest statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 56 motorcyclists lost their lives in crashes in New Jersey in 2013. This number was lower than those during the previous nine years; however, it would be ideal to avoid fatal motorcycle accidents altogether.

One of the most common ways for a biker to be involved in a collision is when another driver turns in front of the oncoming bike, either not noticing the approaching motorcycle or underestimating its speed. One of these factors appeared to have been the case in a recent accident. Authorities say that a car turning left in front of an oncoming motorcycle collided with the bike. The 24-year-old North Bergen man was thrown from his motorcycle and suffered serious injuries. Fortunately, he was reported to be in stable condition. The circumstances surrounding the crash were still being investigated and police had not filed any charges yet.

It would not be unreasonable for the motorcyclist, or any accident victim injured by a negligent driver, to seek compensation for medical expenses and other losses related to the accident. Drivers need to be aware of their surroundings at all times to avoid causing a potentially life-threatening accident with a motorcyclist. Bikers, also, should understand that drivers often don’t realize a motorcycle is on the road nearby until it’s too late. It may not be possible to prevent a negligent or distracted driver from causing a crash, but understanding the risks may lessen a motorcyclist’s chances of becoming another statistic.
