Are you ready to ride your motorcycle with a passenger?

Riding with a motorcycle passenger in New Jersey is usually a lot of fun for both people. However, a passenger also adds some extra challenges and safety considerations. It is important to familiarize yourself with the nuances. Fortunately, the right knowledge will help you be ready to take your friend or loved one along on rides.

The Motor Cycle Safety Foundation provides thorough guidance on motorcycle passenger preparation. MSF’s recommendations begin with checking state laws. Make sure your motorcycle fits New Jersey requirements, and fix any deficiencies before taking someone for a ride. Develop an understanding of what behavior is expected of you and your passenger legally. If you do not know the laws before your trip, you may learn them from getting a citation, or much worse, from an accident.

It is also helpful to know operational differences you can expect to have with a passenger. You may need to make the following adjustments:

  • Cornering clearance
  • Passing time
  • Clutching and throttling when starting from a full stop
  • Braking pressure and timing

Be sure to take a look at the owner’s manual of your motorcycle for advice and recommendations for riding with a passenger, such as weight limits. Make sure your passenger is able to sit properly on the motorcycle and reaches the footrests before leaving.

An extra person on a motorcycle means more complexities on the ride. Fortunately, the necessary thought and preparation is well worth the effort. With knowledge and planning, you will be ready to make many fun and safe memories with your passenger aboard.
