Things like passengers, radios and mirrors have always posed a danger to drivers in New Jersey since cars became part of mainstream society. However, with the advent of smartphones, the potential for distraction behind the wheel is at an all time high. At Escandon, Fernicola, Anderson & Covelli, we know how serious distracted driving accidents can be and that keeping your family safe is important to you.

According to New Jersey 101.5, the number of accident deaths in New Jersey is on the rise and some officials think that an increase is distracted driving is one of the causes. That is why they are now asking people to report other drivers that they see texting or using their smartphones. The hope is that reports by the public, combined with increased enforcement by police, will help prevent further traffic fatalities.

Anyone who wishes to report a distracted driver can do so by calling #77. It is important to note as much information about the car and driver as possible, such as a license plate number and color and make of the vehicle. Even if law enforcement is not able to locate the driver and ticket them, he or she may still receive a warning letter in the mail.

Of course, people who wish to report a distracted driver should be sure to either pull over or use a hands-free device to do so. It only takes a few seconds of not paying attention for a devastating accident to occur. For information on accidents caused by drivers who were texting, please visit our web page.
