What steps should you take after a crash?

A car accident can be so sudden and shocking that you don’t know exactly what to do next. The trauma from the incident, even if injuries are minor, may turn the entire event into a whirlwind of activity that leads you wondering what just happened after it’s all over. This is why it is so important for New Jersey residents to be informed of what to do immediately after a collision. This information can help you be prepared in the event of a car crash, so you have a better chance of defending yourself legally should the need arise.

State Farm has provided some useful tips on what to do after an auto accident. These include the following:

  • Move the vehicles to a safe spot away from traffic if possible.
  • Assess injuries and call for an ambulance if one is needed.
  • Call the police for a minor accident, as well as a major one.
  • Take notes of the circumstances surrounding the crash, get witness information and take pictures of the site and vehicles.
  • Never admit fault even if you believe you caused the crash.
  • Don’t sign anything unless it’s for the police or your insurance agent, and refrain from discussing the accident with anyone other than the above.

If you are too injured to perform any of these steps, it may help to have this information, as well as any other important information and documents in the glove compartment of your vehicle. You may also wish to designate a trusted friend or loved one to act on your behalf if you are hospitalized, until you are able to take over matters yourself.

This information, while helpful, should not replace the advice of an attorney.
