What are some of the driving hazards you face in the fall?

If you’re like many people in New Jersey and throughout the country, you might think autumn is the best time of year. The beautiful changing leaves, the welcome reprieve from the hot summer sun and the upcoming holidays are things that you might look forward to. However, you should understand that there are many safety issues that begin to surface for drivers in fall, which can result in car accidents.

Most of these problems are weather-related. With fallen leaves and crisp winds come rainy days and frosty mornings, all of which can be dangerous on the road and cause an auto accident. There are a multitude of driving dangers you may encounter this season, states Esurance. These may include the following:

  • Slippery roads from early morning frost
  • Fog causing reduced visibility and headlight glare
  • Glare from the sun, particularly in the mornings
  • Increased traffic and pedestrians with school starting
  • Rain and leaves causing slick surfaces
  • An increase in deer on roadways, which tend to roam more in the fall

Other autumn-lovers may also create driving hazards. These “leaf peepers” tend to drive erratically or slow down unexpectedly as they admire fall foliage.

There are many things you can do to reduce your chances of getting into an accident this fall. During rainy weather or on wet and leafy roads, reduce your speed to adjust to the adverse conditions. Avoid turning on your brights in fog, which can increase glare. Give other vehicles more distance and watch out for children walking to school.

You may still be in a car crash caused by a negligent driver no matter how carefully you drive this fall. If you’ve been hurt in an accident, you may be eligible for compensation.
