Are motorcyclists required to wear a helmet in New Jersey?

On Behalf of | Nov 19, 2014 | Motorcycle Accidents |

There are a number of reasons why motorcyclists should understand the importance of wearing a helmet. In addition to safety concerns, if you live in a state where helmets are mandatory, failure to comply with a helmet law could impact your case if you are involved in a motorcycle accident. For motorcyclists in Monmouth and throughout New Jersey, wearing a helmet is required by law.

According to the State of New Jersey’s website, every motorcyclist in the state has to wear a helmet that has been approved by the Department of Transportation. Additionally, helmets must fit securely, be appropriately-sized, have either neck or chin straps and be reflectorized on each side. In fact, the risk of death in motorcycle accidents is three times greater for motorcyclists who are not wearing a helmet. Also, approved helmets have not been shown to prevent motorcyclists from detecting danger and allow riders to see as far to the side as they need to.

The state asks motorcyclists to protect themselves by obeying the helmet law and also lists helpful tips on how to avoid becoming a motorcycle accident victim. In New Jersey, an estimated 75 percent of motorcyclists are injured when they are involved in a motorcycle accident (many of these accidents result in serious injuries that require long term care). Furthermore, these wrecks claim about 70 lives and cause roughly 2,000 injuries every year in the state. As a result, it is imperative for motorcyclists to do everything they can to prevent an accident, such as wearing bright and reflective clothing, never tailgating and staying off the road when tired.
